Watching the  bright sun of my childhood cliff-side disappear over the hill by mid-afternoon got me thinking about the direction we face.

East brought sunrises, warming light, less rain and sharp winds, west was endless summer sunsets, south meant early Spring. North tagged bleak bombing and super-sized UK mars bars.
Direction matters for light and well-being. It  had played a pivotal role in the selling our cliff-side manor, a strict rule of no viewing after 3pm giving a lighting advantage worthy of a movie shoot. Direction heralded our weather –  possibilities, plans and preparations revolved around knowing what to expect on this side of the island.

Add a compass and you set yourself to go where you want. Sailors and explorers have always done it. My love of compasses was born! Some people know what they want from an early age. They follow parents or set off themselves with an enviable certainty.
I wondered if there is a compass inside everyone. Do you have your own compass to discover and use, if only you could put your mind to it? We make hundreds of decisions everyday based on choices that we are scarcely aware of. We select and deselect and in doing, maintain habits, attitudes and behaviours, even when they no longer work for us!
We steer ourselves towards what we think we want, aimlessly and randomly. The realization that the journey counts most is a bonus. How often do we celebrate a destination achieved?
Imagined possibilities and fears are rehearsed in your mind’s eye, playing a vital role in your success.
And so, I help ordinary, special people like you, make up your mind for a change, discover your own direction and set your compass. No need to limit yourself, so no New Year resolutions, please!
What would you really like to change, learn, explore or discover in 2015?
Wishing you an interesting, challenging New Year.
