Breakfast Boosts Fertility

Breakfast like a queen, lunch like like a princess and dine like a pauper – helps you shed weight and boost your fertility!  Read about the new research-based hope for women with PCOS struggling to conceive.
breakfastEating a healthy breakfast as the main meal of the day can boost fertility in women
with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

New research published recently in Science Daily shows that these words of wisdom are true!  Authors are Professor Oren Froy of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Professor Daniela Jocabovitz and Dr Julio Weinstein of Tel Aviv University Wolfson Medical Center. Their study followed 60 women with PCOS for three months. It found that glucose levels were lowered and insulin resistance decreased in the women who ate big breakfasts. Those who held out and waited for a calorie-heavy dinner instead showed a rise in glucose levels and an insulin resistance increase.

A good breakfast sets you up for the day. It can help you maintain a healthy weight and shift unwanted pounds by tuning up your metabolism. Slow-burners keep you going longer. Porridge oats, that favorite of my grandma, fuel a busy morning  through to lunch without the need for sugary snacks.

I love breakfast and always take my time to enjoy it. A usual weekday favorite is home-made brown bread, smothered in butter and topped with cherry tomatoes dusted in black pepper.

raspberriesMy favorite treat is whole-wheat crêpes filled with raspberries from the garden, doused in fresh cream, with a drizzle of chocolate. Making breakfast your main meal is easier than you think. Think in more ‘dinnery’ ways if you need to trim down.  I enjoy the excellent copperandspices.com Indian food for breakfast now and then. Our traditional Irish fry-up breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, tomatoes and black pudding is popular with a lot of blokes. I call it ‘a coronary on a plate.’ It has to go when I’m helping them shed pounds to get fertility fit. Once they notice the benefits of being slimmer in the bedroom, they are quite happy!  Libido – and sperm health – soar when weight drops. Win/win situation? Yes!

Are you overweight?

The first step is assessing your body weight to find out.  One way to check is through a Body Mass Index, also known as a BMI. It takes into account height and weigh,t defining a healthy ratio to strive for. Numbers show whether you are underweight, obese, or morbidly obese. Your BMI number is best in the 20 to 25 range for conceiving easily, having a healthy pregnancy and a strong baby.

If you find yourself outside the ideal weight range, here is some positive news to consider. Shedding just 10 percent of body weight can significantly boost fertility in overweight patients. In in the journal  Fertility and Sterility, overweight women who achieved a 10 percent weight loss had better conceptions rates (88 percent vs. 54 percent) and live birth rates (71 percent vs. 37 percent) –  than those who didn’t reach their weight loss goal.

Breakfast sets the tone for your whole day so why not make it worth getting up for?

Would you consider swopping sugary cereals for salads or casseroles to kickstart your fertility?
