“I just knew – why you shouldn’t ignore your intuition! Ever get that sense something is ‘off, yet you can’t explain why? And try to dismiss it?
A deep knowing in your gut, long before it all pans out? And you’re right?
If so, you’re not imagining it. And you’re certainly not alone. Just recently I didn’t listen to mine, and it cost me. But that’s a story for another day.
Intuition is often misunderstood as something vague or mystical, but it’s actually a finely tuned ability of the brain. It’s your subconscious processing enormous amounts of information. Things like pattern recognition, emotional cues, subtle changes in your body and environment, and translating all of that into a hunch, a feeling, or a quiet inner voice.
In my work as a fertility coach, clients frequently confide in me their sense of knowing they would struggle to conceive. Tears as they share the pain of a miscarriage they felt powerless to prevent. A raw vulnerability tells me they’ve carried this weight alone. Then the immense relief – as I validate that knowing, when I tell them that what they sensed was real, even if they couldn’t put it into words.
How does all this happen?
Some women grow up having to adapt quickly to change. Moving house often, new schools, or having to learn early on to read the emotional landscape of others to feel safe. Emotional awareness is ramped up. When the ground is always shifting, you learn to pay attention to the subtle signals of tone of voice, facial expressions, energy in a room. This kind of attentiveness, born of necessity, often becomes a remarkable gift in adulthood, especially when it comes to tuning into the body.
I see this intuitive power in clients with ADHD. While so much focus is placed on the challenges of attention and focus, people with ADHD can be deeply perceptive and emotionally intelligent. Brains wired to absorb huge volumes of information quickly, often heightens sensitivity to what others miss. But too often told to ‘cop on’ and not to trust what they feel. Dismissed, redirected, and silenced they learn to second-guess their instincts, even when those instincts are incredibly accurate.
In fertility struggles this matters a lot. The journey to conception is often filled with uncertainty, and our medical system leave sfa space for emotional insight. Yet so many of my clients have felt, long before any medical diagnosis, that something in their body or mind was out of sync.
When someone tells me they’ve always felt a mental block or emotional wall they can’t name, that’s where we begin with hypnotherapy. We gently explore the stories, fears, and subconscious beliefs that may be sabotaging their body’s balance. The mind and body are deeply interconnected, and intuition is one of the ways that relationship speaks. And then I watch as the magic unfolds as I help them harness the astonishing power of their intuitive mind for the best life change!.
Clients tell me I must be a mind-reader. They’re amazed when I reflect something they’ve felt, but never voiced aloud. No, I do not have a crystal ball. I’m deeply attuned not just to their words, but to the unspoken layers beneath. I’m simply naming what their inner wisdom already knows. Facilitating a clear vision ahead.
Intuition Isn’t Woo… It’s Neuroscience
Science increasingly supports what many intuitive people have long felt. Research in neuroscience shows that your brain is always processing information beneath our conscious awareness. Intuition is understood as rapid, non-conscious, affectively charged judgment. It is the brain’s way of reaching conclusions quickly, based on subtle cues, memory, and learned patterns.
Emerging research on the gut-brain axis provides even more insight. This two-way communication system between your digestive system and your central nervous system helps explain why we often “feel” things in our gut before our minds can analyse them.
Neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA are produced in large amounts in the gut, where they influence mood, mental clarity, and even instinctive perception.
There is also the concept of neuroception, coined by Dr. Stephen Porges.
Neuroception refers to the brain’s subconscious ability to detect cues of safety or threat in our environment. It helps us respond quickly and instinctively, even when we are not consciously aware of what is happening.
This kind of rapid, body-based awareness is often strongest in people who experience early life stress or trauma and those with heightened emotional sensitivity.
So when you feel something is “off,” even if you cannot explain why, you are not being irrational. You are tapping into one of your body’s most intelligent systems. Intuition is informed. It is grounded in your lived experience, shaped by your nervous system, and expressed through your body’s deep intelligence.
